iCAN - How It Works

iCAN utilises a CAN-Bus architecture to reduce both system cabling, complexity and cost, while improving flexibility and reliability. To do this, a basic series of intelligent modules, all under the control of a master module that provides the network logic, are connected to the CAN-Bus backbone (installed by the body builder) which then permit input (control and sensor) devices and output (after-market) devices to be controlled by the vehicle operator.

iCAN's primary benefit is that it allows pre-programmed logic to be applied to the control network to improve safety and efficiency. What makes it unique is that the control logic is easily created and even more easily loaded into the system, using an SD card. This feature means that programs can be updated easily, on any vehicle, simply by adding a new SD card to the Master Control Module. Programmers can even email the new code to a fleet manager or remote depot to download to vehicles in the field or remote locations.

1. Master Control Module

Applies programmable logic to iCAN system, including safety lock-out features, etc.

2. Input Module

Connects analogue & digital devices such as control panels & switches (User Interfaces) or sensors. Inputs can be momentary, latched, timed, or a combination thereof.

3. Output Module

Connects digital devices such as lights & sirens. Outputs can be momentary, latched, or pulse width modulated.

Input Modules

Allow connection to the CAN-Bus cable backbone of analogue or digital devices.

Each module supports up to 12 digital inputs and 3 analogue inputs. Digital inputs are selectable as high ( 12V or 24V) or low (-12V or -24V). Standard or customised multi-way switch panels are available as part of the iCAN product range.

Devices include:

  • User interfaces:
    - control panels
    - discrete switches

  • Sensors:
    - flow
    - pressure
    - temperature
    - light
    - height/distance
    - rotary motion
Output Modules

Allow connection to the CAN-Bus cable bacbone of digital devices only.

Each module supports up to 6 digital outputs, as well as 2 digital inputs (eg feedback circuits such as limit switches associated with a motor, or pressure sensors associated with a compressor).

Devices include:
