The iCAN CAN-Bus (Controller Area Network) System comprises a range of Input and Output modules that allow signals from devices such as switch panels and sensors, to be sent across a common CAN-Bus backbone in order to control attached devices, such as sirens or pumps.
Central to this twisted pair (ie copper cable) 'bus' style backbone is a Master Control Module which applies any device-specific or over-arching network 'logic' to the operation of all attached devices. This 'logic' is a set of re-programmable code stored on an SD memory card in the Master Control Module. This logic can determine switch functions, safety features and different modes of device operation, based on vehicle-specific requirements.
This 'intelligent' multiplexed control system obviates the need to have individual power and control cables connected between every switch and a switch's corresponding output device. Instead, the backbone broadcasts all input and output signals and applies power to a connected device as required, with reference to the network logic that applies to that device for a specific operation.
This modular approach results in greatly reduced cabling, faster installation times and greater design flexibility. It also results in 'smarter' control functionality than is possible with more traditional cabling systems.
Once installed, a network's logic can be modified by loading new software via the SD card. This speeds system upgrades, extension, etc, which can even be done by the vehicle owner in the field, if required. This obviates the need to have vehicles returned to a service depot for certain upgrades, including simple system logic changes.
